A longtime Florida resident, I was born in Durham, NC while my father finished his graduate training. I returned to Florida in 1953 and have remained a resident of the state since then. An enthusiast of natural beauty, I enjoyed growing up hiking, camping, and surfing throughout Florida.
My formal education is in the life and physical sciences at the University of Florida, the University of Central Florida, and Florida State University. For a time I worked in the university system doing research into the answers to obscure but interesting questions. In 1983, I left for private industry in Central Florida where I am currently Chief Technology Officer at a major electro-optics company. My interest in the technical aspect of light and photography has grown out of my involvement in light and the operation and application of lasers. As I develop as a photographer, I am continually amazed at the artistic complexity in capturing a photograph that is more than just an application of technology. For a time, as a teenager, I experimented with painting with oils. I found painting rewarding but also frustrating since I expected my small motor skills to be much more advanced than they actually are. For a time I also found photography difficult to fully engage in because of the requirements of darkroom work. The advance of digital image manipulation has removed any technical barriers to my immersion into photography. Statement: I have always been intrigued with the various scales of images to be found in nature and man's presence in nature. There can be as much in the close-up image of the sand on a Florida beach as there is in the mountains of Appalachia. I am especially interested in capturing images of nature and man-made structures with strong lines, shadows, and reflected colors.
